An impressive thing about this book is how it can convey to avid NON-gardeners and nature-avoiders like me the joys of maintaining a garden. Originally, I bought a copy of this book for my father so that we'd have something new (and nonpolitical!) to talk about. While reading it, I was surprised how effectively the essays and anecdotes capture the ways you can emotionally invest in a garden through the seasons. The book illustrates the appeal and subtleties of gardens without becoming overly gushy or sentimental, and it never lapses into preachy or New-Age rhetoric. The prose is lyrical without being artsy, and it's personal without being excessively confessional. (How refreshing!) The author shows that gardening isn't just the adult equivalent of playing in the dirt (as I sometimes thought) but that it can be a genuinely meaningful and satisfying endeavor. A few times while reading this book, I caught myself thinking the equivalent of, "Oh, I get it. So that's what the fuss is about." If nothing else after reading this book, I'll try not to sigh so loudly when my dad starts complaining about those tomatoes of his. A pleasant surprise and a solid read.Product details

Carol Hicks shares her delight in discovering a talent for gardening after many years of tending plants that typically shriveled or died. As she pursues her new passion, Hicks finds peace, beauty, and renewal in the garden -- just as her mother did. Experienced gardeners will identify with these heart-felt reflections on the life lessons a garden offers. Beginners will find encouragement and inspiration.
It was a delightful book and so descriptive. I Loved it. I found myself remembering when I was able to do gardening and relishing the fact that I have experienced much the same as the author.
I had the opportunity to hear Carol read passages from her book. I do believe that if she read the entire book, a completely different population would enjoy this book as much as I did listening to her.
The author has a deep appreciation for what it means to love the things that grow in a garden -- the things you planned for the garden, as well as those that you never planned to see there. In short, she shares her delight with nature. And she does so in a simple, clean, and elegant style. Reading this book is like sharing meditations on the process of living.
I loved this book, it brought back so many vivid memories of my mother gardening and sharing plants and stories with friends in Connecticut where I grew up. Carol put into words a lot of my own feelings about my relationships with my own plants and land here in Florida. And made me realize how much like my mother I've become and how close I feel to her when I'm in my own garden. I've shared this book with many gardening friends and they've all been enchanted. Thank you Carol Siyaki Hicks for a beautifully landscaped book...cover to cover.
